Temperature converter

Temperature is measured with thermometers that may be calibrated to a variety of temperature scales. In most of the world (except for Belize, Myanmar, Liberia and the United States), the Celsius scale is used for most temperature measuring purposes. The entire scientific world (these countries included) measures temperature using the Celsius scale and thermodynamic temperature using the kelvin scale, which is just the Celsius scale shifted downwards so that 0 ºK = −273.15 °C, or absolute zero.

The theme of this year’s WTISD is Protecting Children in Cyberspace aims at ensuring that children can safely access the Internet and its valuable resources without fear of falling prey to unscrupulous predators in cyberspace.

According to recent surveys, over 60 per cent of children and teenagers talk in chat rooms on a daily basis. Three in four children online are willing to share personal information about themselves and their family in exchange for goods and services. And one in five children will be targeted by a predator or paedophile each year.

Corporate Black Money

Press camera symbol to open the video in a new page and press CC to turn on English closed captions

"Over the past two years, the U.S. government has collected almost a billion and a half dollars in fines in foreign bribery cases" says Mark Mendelsohn, the Department of Justice prosecutor in charge of more than 100 ongoing cases, one of which culminated in a record seven-year prison term for the former CEO of a subsidiary of the Halliburton Corp., and another which ended in a record $800 million fine against the German giant Siemens. "There's a whole world of conduct that rarely sees the light of day."

In Black Money, FRONTLINE correspondent Lowell Bergman investigates this shadowy side of international business, shedding light on multinational companies that have routinely made secret payments -- often referred to as "black money" -- to win billions in business.

"The thing about black money is you can claim it's being used for all kinds of things," the British reporter David Leigh tells Bergman. "You get pots of black money that nobody sees, nobody has to account for, ... you can do anything you like with. Mostly what happens with black money is people steal it because they can."

The comic also focuses on a blogger, albeit a unique one - a five year old who uses voice recognition software to get over his typing inabilities. Moon Phases

Why do we only see one side of the Moon?

Actually a little bit more than half of the Moon's surface is observable from Earth.

If the Moon rotates, all its sides should be seen on a regular basis, as well as different sides of the Moon should be seen from different parts of the Earth and throughout the different seasons and hours of the day. I'm sure you know the common explanation that the Moon rotates the same speed as it orbits the Earth but such a coincidence is about 1:10.000.000 to happen assuming that there are millions of planets and satellites in our Universe, and they each have their own unique speed. Very, very strange indeed.

The side of the Moon that faces Earth is called the near side, and the opposite side the far side. The far side is often inaccurately called the "dark side", but in fact, it is illuminated exactly as often as the near side: once per lunar day, during the new moon phase we observe on Earth when the near side is dark.

NOTE: This gadget calculates the moon phase based on YOUR computer system date and time zone.

Choose your hemisphere clicking the symbol at right of the clock hour.

Newspaper Web Reader

Read foreign websites without having to use a dictionary! The WordChamp® web reader analyzes any website you specify, and will show pop-up definitions and audio clips for words that you point at.

Using the Web Reader Pop-Up Menu
When you roll your mouse over a word in the Web Reader, you will see a box containing possible translations for the word you are pointing at. There are frequently multiple translations, in which case you will have to choose the one that is most appropriate, given the context. If you click a translation, you will add that translation to a list of words you can practice.

User Translations
In addition to the translations that we provide, you can also choose to view translations that have been entered by other users. These translations are usually correct, and are generally quite useful (especially in languages which are less well-covered by the "official" translations). However, due to the potential for abuse, you also have the option of hiding these translations.

Editing Translations
If the correct translation is not present, or if you think that one of the translations is incorrect, you can edit the entries by clicking the "edit translations" link (you must be logged in to edit a translation).

Practice your pronunciation
You can hear the pronunciation of words by clicking on the speaker or practice your English pronunciation by clicking on the symbol to the right of the speaker.
